Post World AIDS Day Celebration at Sikhar Chandi Jolly

On 3rd Dec. 2011 around 30 NSS Volunteers from the school of Biotechnology and Electrical Eng. made their way to Shikhar Chandi Jolly Slum Area in the observance of Worlds AIDS Day.

The volunteers were divided into nine groups with three members in each group. They went door-to-door to reach out to the residents and educate them on HIV/AIDS. After educating the residents, the NSS volunteers distributed the educational materials which came from the Orissa States AIDS Control Society (OSACS). The Filipino Volunteer for the National Service Scheme Orissa, Ms. Renie-Tess Martin, coordinated with OSACS and requested the educational materials prior the activity. Aside from educating the community people, the volunteers encouraged the people to come to the session hall for the film viewing about HIV/AIDS which took about half an hour. About 30 households were reached out and educated about HIV/AIDS.

While waiting for the film to finish, the NSS volunteers were able to plan out the next activities. One of the plans is to train the women of Sikhar Chandi Jolly on livelihood which includes handicrafts and selling the products during the Annual Techno-Management Festival in KIIT in which the profits will be utilized to buy basic necessities for them such as rice and cooking oil. Another plan is to go back to Adruta Children Home Orphanage and hold a drawing competition. The winning entries will be printed out on cards which will be sold to KIIT students. The profits will be donated to the orphanage. However, some detailed planning has to be done for better implementation of the proposed projects.
The NSS volunteers enjoyed the occasion and they want to do more volunteering activities. The new NSS volunteers of KSBT are added on the group page KIIT NSS Society which serves as a venue for exchange of ideas and opinions about NSS.
