Post World AIDS Day Celebration at Sikhar Chandi Jolly

On 3rd Dec. 2011 around 30 NSS Volunteers from the school of Biotechnology and Electrical Eng. made their way to Shikhar Chandi Jolly Slum Area in the observance of Worlds AIDS Day.

The volunteers were divided into nine groups with three members in each group. They went door-to-door to reach out to the residents and educate them on HIV/AIDS. After educating the residents, the NSS volunteers distributed the educational materials which came from the Orissa States AIDS Control Society (OSACS). The Filipino Volunteer for the National Service Scheme Orissa, Ms. Renie-Tess Martin, coordinated with OSACS and requested the educational materials prior the activity. Aside from educating the community people, the volunteers encouraged the people to come to the session hall for the film viewing about HIV/AIDS which took about half an hour. About 30 households were reached out and educated about HIV/AIDS.

While waiting for the film to finish, the NSS volunteers were able to plan out the next activities. One of the plans is to train the women of Sikhar Chandi Jolly on livelihood which includes handicrafts and selling the products during the Annual Techno-Management Festival in KIIT in which the profits will be utilized to buy basic necessities for them such as rice and cooking oil. Another plan is to go back to Adruta Children Home Orphanage and hold a drawing competition. The winning entries will be printed out on cards which will be sold to KIIT students. The profits will be donated to the orphanage. However, some detailed planning has to be done for better implementation of the proposed projects.
The NSS volunteers enjoyed the occasion and they want to do more volunteering activities. The new NSS volunteers of KSBT are added on the group page KIIT NSS Society which serves as a venue for exchange of ideas and opinions about NSS.

KIIT NSS’ CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION IN ADRUTA CHILDREN HOME

More than 60 NSS volunteers from the School of Management, School of Biotechnology and different Schools of Engineering joined hand in hand in celebrating the Children’s Day in India at the Adruta Children Home under the guidance and support of Professor Dillip Behera, NSS Program Officer of Civil Engineering.
Adruta Children Home came into existence as a part of the mission to find home for the children abandoned by their parents. Aside from providing the children with the basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, education and medicine, the organization provides a conducive environment for the development of the children and to eventually mainstream them to the society. The founder, Dr. Aditya Kumar Mohanty, believes that every child needs our protective care and loving pat in order to grow into completeness, more so, a girl-child in distress. It is located in Gadakana, Bhubaneswar.
The main objective of the activity was to simply have fun with the kids since the day is really meant for the children. The KSOM NSS Volunteers headed the activity by facilitating games, rhyme singing, fun dancing with kids and distribution of the “gifts” for the children. KSOM NSS Volunteers, as well as non-NSS, contributed from their own pockets to buy smiley stress balls, pencils, party caps and some sweets for the kids. The volunteers from Biotechnology and Engineering were enthusiastic in interacting with the kids through games and chatting. Since there are babies in the orphanage, some of the students found way to cuddle them and play with them. As I was observing the volunteers, I didn’t see the childish acts but instead I saw young parents taking care of their children. They became parents for more than an hour.
The activity ended at around 6pm since the children needed to do their daily prayer. It was sad to say goodbye to “our children”. The volunteers left with great passion of going back and doing more for these children and also planning to reach out to the aged people and the disabled people in welfare institutions.

It was a successful activity which the student volunteers will cherish in their lives. KIITIANs are indeed true-blooded volunteers..
