Eighteen NSS Volunteers from the Schools of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics joined in the observance of the International Volunteers Day held on the 5th of December at the auditorium of the Center of Youth and Social Development (CYSD) Office. The event was organized hand in hand by Bakul Foundation, CYSD, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/United Nations Volunteer (UNV). With the theme “Volunteerism: Commitment, Participation and Pride”, about 300 young volunteers from different colleges and universities in Bhubaneswar including KIIT came to participate and showed their pride as true-blooded committed volunteers. The following KIIT NSS volunteers participated in the celebration: Amit Kumar, Arkadeep Mitra, Arkadyuti Bandyopadhay, Bhargav Chakraborty, Bishal Kumar Dhinajre, Nikku Shahi, Prachi Priya, B. Gravane, Divya, Rahul Chetwani, Sanjay Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Gautam, Ayanghosh, Gourav Sinha, Nikhil Kumar Ranjan, Manish Kumar, Kumar Pravir, and Rajnish Kumar.
The programme starts after the participants are done with the registration. There were some educative movies on Volunteerism shown to the audience. After the ceremonial lighting of the candles, the esteemed speakers gave their inspirational messages to the young people who attended the event. The esteemed speakers were Shri Jagadananda (State Information Commissioner of Odisha), Prof. Anup Kumar Dash (CYSD), Dr. Sruti Mohapatra (Founder and Secretary General of SWABHIMAN), Prof. Radhamohan (Former State Information Commissioner of Orissa, former NSS Regional Center Head, leading Environmentalist), Shri Sujit Mohapatra (Director of Bakul Foundation), Shri PK Sahoo (Chairman, CYSD) and Ms. Renie-Tess Martin from the Philippines(Voluntary Services Overseas Volunteer for NSS Orissa and KIIT, Volunteer Management Advisor). All the esteemed speakers encouraged the young volunteers to become active citizens, to sustain the spirit of volunteerism, and to influence other youth to volunteer. Some volunteers performed short plays on Creative Volunteerism. The highlight of the event was the recognition and felicitation of Ten Outstanding Volunteers for their great contribution to their communities. The awardees are Chandra Sagaria (Community Mobilizer, Koraput District), Subasini Sethi (Inspiring Rural Entrepreneurship in Keonjhar District), Phulamani Hembrum (Community Development Worker in Kendujhar District), Lipi Das (Volunteer for Education of School Drop-outs in Bhubaneswar), Lochan kumar Barik (Community Mobilizer and Expert in Mass Awareness Campaigns in Mayurbhanj District), Dayamanti Mohanta (Inspirational Tribal Woman in Mayurbhanj District), Manohar Kamhar (Mobilizing Tribals for Sustainable Development and Health in Koraput District), Abhaya Mohanta (Volunteering for Blood Donation and Education for the Blind in Bhubaneswar), Prashant Moharana (volunteering for Drug Users and HIV Positive people in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khurda and Puri districts), and Gayatri Kar (Volunteering for the Differently-abled for an Inclusive Society in Bhubaneswar). The event ended with Musical Band Performance by Vighnaaz on Topical themes.
The programme closed at around 5PM. Bakul Foundation gave some saplings to the participants before leaving CYSD’s premises. KIIT NSS volunteers took four saplings and planted it on KIIT grounds in Kathjori Campus.

It was a long but a very good experience for the NSS volunteers for them to become more motivated and more enthusiastic in volunteering.
